Skike Demo Sessions

PictureMadison and Lauren
Last Saturday we conducted another Skike demo session and were joined by parents Charles and Abigail and their daughters Madison and Lauren. Along for the ride and assisting us were Kate and her daughter Emma who purchased their own Skikes after attending one of our demo sessions at Westerfolds Park last December.

After a lesson on technique from Len, the family were all rolling. Madison and Lauren both did well on their first session and previous skating and skiing experience helped them gain confidence.

Why not join us at one of our free regular demo sessions. In Melbourne we hold them regularly at Westerfolds Park Templestowe, usually on a Saturday morning from 10.00am. Bookings are required. The sessions go for about an hour and are tailored to your level of experience and include an intensive technique lesson designed to get you rolling quickly and enjoying the benefits that Skikes offer. Bring your own helmet, gloves, knee and elbow protection if possible and we will take care of the rest. A water bottle and sunscreen is also recommended.

For those outside Melbourne wanting to try out Skikes, get in contact with us and we can put you in touch with other skikers around the country that would be happy to help.

Lake Mountain Road Closures

4/2/2014

Lake Mountain Road will be closed to motor vehicles but open to skikers, roller-skiiers and cyclists this Saturday 8 February as well as 8  March and 12 April. These road closures will be ideal opportunities to train for the 2014 Skike/Roller-ski Challenge over the very same course scheduled for 11 May 2014.  Last year's roller-ski challenge was a great event and this one will most certainly be bigger and better.

One Skiker that knows the road well is Jon Spring.  He says, "
One piece of advice for all those interested in skiking up the mountain........ go early!  The stretch of road from the ticket office to the summit will be liquid bitumen on a hot day (like Saturday) and should be avoided after 10.00am."  Refer to an earlier Skike Blog about Jon's adventures on Lake Mountain Road.

PictureMichal Trnka presented with his new Skikes
Our congratulations go to Michal Trnka, winner of the Victorian Ski Chase grand prize who was presented with a pair of V07-PLUS Skikes at Westerfolds Park on Saturday 11 January 2014. A large turnout of local skikers attended the presentation. After setting up his new Skikes and with a brief lesson on braking and control, Michal and the group explored over 25 kilometres of paths and dirt tracks around Westerfolds Park and beyond. Michal tracked his first skiking session with GPS and it can be seen here

Judging from the activity this weekend we're sure that Michal's skikes will get plenty of use around the Mt Beauty area outside the ski season. With his new off-track skiking skills there could be a lot of increased skiking activity with the growing skike community in the area.

Check out the blog entry on the AUSXC website and our Gallery page for some pictures from the day. Why not get involved in the Victorian Ski Chase during the coming ski season. You never know, you could be the next winner of a new set of skikes. Our Victorian Ski Chase Page has all the details.

Skike Australia visit to Canberra

9/12/2013

Len and Marshall had a busy time in Canberra recently. Our first stop was a visit to Radford College where we had a Friday lunchtime demo session with a good turnout of junior and senior school snowsports team members, sports staff and parents.
PictureA skiking session at Stromlo Forest Park
On Friday afternoon and most of Saturday we spent time catching up with Canberra skikers and St Clare’s students and their families at Stromlo Forest Park. The criterium curcuit and pavilion is an excellent facility with plenty of smooth bitumen to learn skiking on. Len also took a couple of participants around the gravel carpark and nearby MTB tracks to demonstrate the ability of Skikes over varying terrain.

The Skike tent was set up opposite the entrance to the Canberra Get Active Expo on Sunday 1 December. The event was well attended and we had a steady stream of people trying out demo sets of Skikes all day.

A special word of thanks to fellow skiker Jonathan Mandl who assisted us with appointments and our planning over the weekend and helped to make our visit to Canberra well worthwhile.

Fellow skikers Wendy Hughes and Linda Clee also assisted setting up our visit. We are endeavouring to establish regular Friday evening Skike Force gatherings  from Stromlo Forrest park based around attendance by Wendy and Linda and their families.

On Saturday 9 November the Vic Ski Chase prizes were drawn at the SXCV Annual General Meeting, under the supervision of the SXCV committee and other meeting attendees.

There were three very deserving winners.

The winner of the grand prize, a pair of VO7 PLUS Skikes donated by Skike Australia was Michal Trnka.  Congratulations and happy skiking Michal.

Our two winners of the $600 cash prizes, randomly drawn among the top 10 male and female point scorers aged 25 and under, were Aliena Oldis and Will Middlemiss.  Both Aliena and Will have recently joined the Victorian XC junior squad.  The Vic Ski Chase organisers wish them both all the best with their skiing endeavours.

A special thankyou goes out to the very generous anonymous donors who made the prize possible.

Skike Australia have been delighted to be sponsors of this event for another year.
