Lake Mountain Road Closures

4/2/2014

Lake Mountain Road will be closed to motor vehicles but open to skikers, roller-skiiers and cyclists this Saturday 8 February as well as 8  March and 12 April. These road closures will be ideal opportunities to train for the 2014 Skike/Roller-ski Challenge over the very same course scheduled for 11 May 2014.  Last year's roller-ski challenge was a great event and this one will most certainly be bigger and better.

One Skiker that knows the road well is Jon Spring.  He says, "
One piece of advice for all those interested in skiking up the mountain........ go early!  The stretch of road from the ticket office to the summit will be liquid bitumen on a hot day (like Saturday) and should be avoided after 10.00am."  Refer to an earlier Skike Blog about Jon's adventures on Lake Mountain Road.

Skike Australia visit to Canberra

9/12/2013

Len and Marshall had a busy time in Canberra recently. Our first stop was a visit to Radford College where we had a Friday lunchtime demo session with a good turnout of junior and senior school snowsports team members, sports staff and parents.

On Friday afternoon and most of Saturday we spent time catching up with Canberra skikers and St Clare’s students and their families at Stromlo Forest Park. The criterium curcuit and pavilion is an excellent facility with plenty of smooth bitumen to learn skiking on. Len also took a couple of participants around the gravel carpark and nearby MTB tracks to demonstrate the ability of Skikes over varying terrain.

The Skike tent was set up opposite the entrance to the Canberra Get Active Expo on Sunday 1 December. The event was well attended and we had a steady stream of people trying out demo sets of Skikes all day.

A special word of thanks to fellow skiker Jonathan Mandl who assisted us with appointments and our planning over the weekend and helped to make our visit to Canberra well worthwhile.

Fellow skikers Wendy Hughes and Linda Clee also assisted setting up our visit. We are endeavouring to establish regular Friday evening Skike Force gatherings  from Stromlo Forrest park based around attendance by Wendy and Linda and their families.

Vic Ski Chase update - Rocky Valley Rush

20/8/2013

After the unfortunate cancellation of three of the Vic Ski Chase events due to insufficient snow, the competition is up and running again after the successful running of the Rocky Valley Rush.  Many thanks to the team at Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club who once again put on a great event in what was promising to be very challenging conditions.  Somehow they managed to put together a race with a tail-wind for 90% of the course.

In the women's competition a couple of recent registrations saw the Oldis sisters rocket into second and fourth place, with Kerryn Rim and Belinda Phillips holding on to first and third places respectively after solid performances in the Rocky valley Rush.  With one event to go (Hoppet/Birkebeiner/Joey) there appear to be only two people capable of challenging Kerryn's strong lead, the very promising XC skiing new-comers, Brianna and Aliena Oldis.

In the men's competition Kevin Tory has an unbeatable lead, demonstrating the old maxim "you've got to be in it to win it".  Ben Derrick and Ian Franzke are currently in second and third place respectively, but they could face serious challenges from Bruce Ellis, Paul Waller and Merve Trease this Saturday. (Remember only your best two Falls Creek events are included in the points tally.)

Vic Ski Chase Update - Bullfight Charge

5/8/2013

The Bullfight charge was the second event to be held in the Victorian Ski Chase.  Not surprisingly, the only skier to compete in both events (Kevin Tory) now holds a handy lead in the men’s competition.  A great ski by Bruce Ellis sees him jump straight to second place.  In the women’s competition Penny Grose is the only registered newcomer, and she jumps to fourth place with a second place finish.

Check out these links for the latest results:
WomensSkiChaseResults 5 Aug 2013
MensSkiChaseResults5 Aug 2013
(The results include people who have registered but are yet to participate in an event.)

A reminder that everyone who registers and participates in at least one event receives a chance to win a pair of skikes from Skike Australia, and all entrants 25 and under are also eligible for a chance to win prize money.  See competition details on the Victorian Ski Chase page.

We still have fewer than 10 male and female participants with ski chase points who are eligible for the cash prize (25 and under).  So if you have competed in either event we encourage you to register and get your name included in the prize draw.

Vic Ski Chase Update - High Plains Tour Results

5/8/2013

The first event of the Victorian Ski chase to be held this year was the Snowgum Wodonga high Plains Tour.  A good turn-out in great skiing weather (despite the threat of rain) saw some great racing and some familiar names appearing at the top of the leader board.

In the women’s competition Kerryn Rim had a solid start 10 points clear of second place Emma Pollard, with Belinda Phillips two points behind her in third place.   In the men’s competition, a big win by Ben Derrick combined with his no longer insignificant age points sees him take a substantial lead.  A very honourable mention goes to J-C Legras who put in an incredible ski to take second place, a few points clear of third place Ian Franzke.  With only three points separating third and eighth place we can look forward to changes in the top three positions in the coming weeks.  In both the mens and womens competition we could see changes in these places as more people register for the competition.

A reminder that everyone who registers receives a chance to win a pair of skikes.  All entrants 25 and under are also eligible for a chance to win prize money.  See competition details on our Victorian Ski Chase page.

At present we only have six males and two females eligible for the prize money.  As the top ten male and female point scorers go into the draw for a $600 prize, the odds are looking pretty good for these entrants.  You’ve got to be in it to win it, so register here at http://tinyurl.com/victorianskichase.  Further information also available at www.ausxc.com

skikes at the lake mountain roller-ski challenge

15/5/2013

Picture
Skikes were at the recent Lake Mountain Rolller-Ski Challenge on 5th May 2013 and it was pleasing to see almost a quarter of the entries on skikes.

It was a cool crisp morning with strong winds blowing and the finish line was fogged in at the commencement of the race. At the conclusion, the sun was poking through the cloud cover and the wind did begin to subside somewhat.

Congratulations to Andrew Walker on being the first to cross the finish line on a pair of skikes.

We commend Andrew Paul and the organisers for a great little event with a good turnout of entrants participating on the day, especially considering the short notice and quick planning only few weeks earlier.  If it does become a regular event, with interest like this, it will only get bigger and better.  We can't wait for the next one!

Check out The Lake Mountain Roller-Ski Challenge video of the event that Erwin from Walker Street Productions put together.
