hga xc ski race weekend  9-10 july

5/7/2016

This weekend at Falls Creek there is going to be  2 very enjoyable days of Cross Country ski racing with the Snow Trek & Travel High Plains Tour on Saturday 9 July and the YMCA Howmans Gap Victorian Relays on Sunday 10 July.

These are fun races which are great preparation for later races in the season, including Junior and Senior Championships, the Kangaroo Hoppet, and School competitions. The races are run by Howmans Gap Allstars Ski Club Inc on behalf of Ski Cross Country Victoria.

The Snow Trek & Travel High Plains Tour is a freestyle (skate or classic) race with 4 course distance on offer being 2.5 km, 5 km, 10 km, and new for 2016, a 1 km fun event to encourage participation by skiers of any age to have a try of going around an easy race course (children 10 years of age and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.) HGA races are well known for lots of spot prizes as well as age category prizes. Snow Trek & Travel  in Wodonga is the place to go to purchase you ski and outdoor equipment. Another attraction this year is that by participating you will be helping to test  improved electronic timing for this year’s Kangaroo Hoppet.

The YMCA Howmans Gap Victorian Relays of 2.5kms and 5kms are open to any three person teams (one classic and 2 freestyle skiers). It is fun to ski in a team, encourage your team mates and challenge other teams. Skiers do not need to be members of an organisation, but teams with members all of the same club, school or university are encouraged. Championships can only be awarded to teams who are all of the same sex and all team members being eligible for their respective age category. Race Sponsors YMCA Howmans Gap this year are providing a major prize as a spot prize to be randomly drawn for one night's accommodation for 2 people at Howmans Gap. Staying at Homans Gap provides both meals and accommodation as well as a great location and facilities, like a wax shelter in which you can prepare your skis.

All the races are scheduled to start at 11am , with the exception of Saturday’s 1km fun event which will start at 12 noon, and it will only cost $5 to enter. Race entry fees for all the other races are also low cost and are still the same entry fees as they were in 2012.  Entries will be taken in the Windy Corner Day Shelter between 9 and 10am on race day, but anyone racing in the
Snow Trek & Travel High Plains Tour are encouraged to please pre-register online at High Plains Tour Entries up to 8.00pm on Friday 8/7/16. After pre-registering online, on the morning of the race you will need to sign the individual pre-printed entry form that will be waiting for you, and pay your entry fees to complete your race entry.

The Snow Trek & Travel High Plains Tour is a Skike Australia 2016 Victorian Ski Chase event, which means participation in the race can enable skiers to be in the major prize draw of a set of v07 PLUS skikes, as well as Rochford wines and cash prizes for juniors, if they register for the Ski Chase, which is free. The Skike Australia 2016 Victorian Ski Chase is run by Ski Cross Country Victoria and its purpose is to encourage participation in, and grow cross country ski  racing. Details at http://www.skike.com.au/victorian-ski-chase.htmlPlease, as Molly would say,  “do yourself a favour” and support the races this coming weekend, and the race sponsors http://www.crosscountryskier.com.au/ and http://www.camps.ymca.org.au/locate/howmans-gap.html

After meeting the editor of the Warrandyte Diary on the Yarra river trail, a good half page article on skiking has been published in the sports section on page 34 of the February 2016 edition of the newspaper. Some of our skikers are in the photographs and the story. In October 2015 the newspaper won a bunch of awards, including Best Community Newspaper of the year for the second year in a row . skikers in the snow

Winter skiing is underway in Australia and skikers are performing very well in Cross Country ski races. On Sunday 9 August skiker Kevin Tory won the 14km Rocky Valley Rush Classic technique race at Falls Creek. Here is Kevin (#17) the first skier away from the start line. Notice how far forward Kevin is, up on his toes, and lots of air between the back of his skis and the ski tracks. Only his ski tips remain in touch with the snow.

John Joyce in Sydney is now regularly getting together new skikers mostly on Sundays, helping them improve their technique and get maximum enjoyment from their Skikes.

Also Adam Dunn is doing the same in Brisbane.

Other groups around the country are meeting regularly to help newcomers, and enjoy the benefits and friendship of skiking with others. Contact us for details and we can put you in touch with other skikers in your area.

Diane Bloom and her new Skikes, with husband Carter (right) and Kevin Tory
Our congratulations go to Diane Bloom, winner of the 2014 Victorian Ski Chase grand prize who was presented with a pair of V07-PLUS Skikes at Westerfolds Park on Saturday 1st November 2014. Rain earlier in the morning cleared and after setting up her new Skikes, Diane and a group of other skikers explored some of the paths and dirt tracks around Westerfolds Park.

Judging from the activity this weekend we're sure that
Diane's skikes will get plenty of use, particularly from her husband Carter who borrowed a set of our demo Skikes for the morning and suggested that he will be using Diane's Skikes at every available opportunity.

Check out the blog entry on the AUSXC website and our Gallery page for some pictures from the day. Why not get involved in the
2015 Victorian Ski Chase next ski season. You never know, you could be the next winner of a new set of skikes. Our Victorian Ski Chase Page has all the details.

Spring Skiking officially starts

12/10/2014

It is time to get those skikes out, pump up the tyres and hit the trails. The snow has melted and Spring is now with us.

In Melbourne we have been enjoying pleasant Spring weather for the past couple of weekends so it is time to restart regular group skiking from 7.30am and 10am. If you are in Melbourne, come join in the fun and enjoy the support and pleasure of journeying with other skikers, exploring trails and deciding which way will we go today, out from and around Westerfolds Park Templestowe. We are also holding regular introductory demo sessions for Newbies. If you would like to join us, email Len for further details.

Graham Leary is available to assist beginners or advanced beginners at Jells Park in Waverley, starting around 7.30am on Saturdays.  Graham reports that the trails are less intimidating than at Westerfolds and there is a good flat packed earth trail that enables you to concentrate on technique without picking up speed. There is also the added advantage of a coffee shop and many kilometres of paths linking to Jells Park from the Eastlink bike trail.

Castlemaine skikers are meeting at 10am on Tuesdays and Marie is happy to meet with others for possible weekend sessions too.

Jackie Nowell is keen to meet with other interested skikers anywhere along the west coast of Victoria from Geelong to Portland.

In Brisbane, Adam Dunn leads a growing group of skikers for a ride on most weekends.

John Joyce in Sydney will also start meeting other skikers for a ride from this weekend onwards.

Canberra skikers meet at Stomlo Forest Park Criterium Circuit regularly. .

There are now quite a number of skikers in Perth and we are keen to also help them meet, support each other and enjoy skiking.

If you would like to join any of these groups or start a regular skiking group of your own, please let us know so we can put you in touch.
